Understanding the body’s natural way of letting go
Stress affects more than the mind. It lives in the body. Many people can identify the mental effects of stress, such as racing thoughts, irritability, or difficulty concentrating. What often goes unnoticed is how stress is physically felt through muscle tension, nervous system activation, and chronic patterns of holding. Tension and Trauma Releasing Exercises, commonly known as TRE®, offer a unique approach to stress relief by working directly with the body’s natural ability to release tension and restore balance.
TRE® is gaining attention because it recognizes something many traditional approaches overlook. Sometimes the body needs an opportunity to release stress, not just talk about it.
What is TRE®?
TRE is a series of simple exercises designed to activate the body’s natural tremor mechanism. These gentle, controlled tremors are different from shaking caused by fear or cold. Instead, they are a biological response that helps release deep muscular tension and calm the nervous system.
Developed by Dr. David Berceli, TRE® is based on the understanding that humans naturally shake after stressful or threatening experiences. Animals regularly use this process in the wild to discharge stress from their bodies. Humans have the same capacity, but many of us have learned to suppress or ignore these natural responses.
By intentionally creating a safe environment for these tremors to occur, TRE® helps the body complete a process that may have been interrupted by chronic stress, trauma, or the demands of daily life and stay in that fight/flight response.
How TRE® supports stress relief
When stress becomes chronic, the nervous system can remain stuck in a state of activation. The body stays prepared for danger even when no immediate threat exists. This can contribute to symptoms such as anxiety, sleep difficulties, muscle tension, fatigue, and emotional overwhelm.
TRE® helps by encouraging the nervous system to shift out of survival mode and into a more regulated state. Many people report benefits such as:
- Reduced physical tension
- Improved sleep quality
- Increased feelings of calm
- Better emotional regulation
- Greater awareness of bodily sensations
- A stronger sense of connection between mind and body
While experiences vary, the common theme is that TRE® creates an opportunity for the body to release what it has been carrying.
Why the body matters in healing
Many high performers are accustomed to solving problems through thinking, planning, and action. While these skills are valuable, stress is not always resolved through logic alone. The body plays an essential role in how we process experiences and recover from challenges.
Approaches like TRE® help clients move beyond intellectual understanding and engage with healing on a physiological level. This can be especially valuable for individuals who feel stuck despite having insight into their patterns or stressors. Sometimes the missing piece is not more awareness. It is creating space for the body to participate in the healing process.
A different path to nervous system regulation
TRE® is not about forcing relaxation, having to quiet the mind, or eliminating stress completely. It is about helping the body do what it was naturally designed to do. By supporting the release of held tension, TRE® can become a powerful complement to therapy and other wellness practices.
At Born Counseling, we believe healing happens when the mind and body work together. Stress does not have to remain trapped in your system. When given the right support, the body has an incredible capacity to release, recover, and return to balance.
Sometimes healing begins not by doing more, but by allowing the body to let go of what it no longer needs to carry.
